If the message has a picture you have to open it to see it as 1/4 nof the screen is not So you are lucky if the message body starts on the first line, but we all know that most cases you need to scroll the reading pane to see any message even the small ones. If you are using the ribbon also then you have 4 quarters of screen ribbon/message

In outlook 2013 i find a large waste of screen space as the header of a message displayed in the reading pane takes up over 1/4 of the full height of the screen/outlook/window. Remove message header in reading pane is not possible.
